  • A novel's beginning serves to set up the story and should include several key elements to be successful.
  • Writing Style (25 points possible)

  • A novel's first seven pages should be well-written, well-paced, and balanced between dialogue and narrative.
  • The Hook (15 points possible)

  • First impressions are lasting. The first sentence and first paragraph are the most important for any book. These must be powerful and compelling to draw the reader into the story.
  • Point of View (15 points possible)

  • The point of view should be consistent throughout each scene so the reader will be able to identify with the character telling the story at the beginning.
  • Overall Impression (20 points possible)

  • The crucial first pages of a novel make a promise to the reader about the rest of the book.
